or at least the one counsellor we have, on Sunday.
Carrying on from our scripture scavenger hunt I asked the kids to bring an object to sunday school with a scripture to go with said object. That object had to be IN the scripture. Not symbolic, (like one kid brought headphones..holy ghost and phone, prayer..NO!! it had to have the word in the scripture)
the counsellor had 2 mins (no cheating and using the index or hand held scriptures to look up 'key words')
to find a scripture that went with the object.
If he could find ANY scripture he won a choc bar, and if he couldnt the person who brought the object, they got the chocolate bar after sharing their scripture.
Some of the objects were apple, palm tree, file, ( 1 samuel 13;21...that was mine!! I won) herbs, silver bowl, lantern, suit, shoes, book, hymns, white wool, valley, sign post with the number 7 on, lamp, a toy snake
He won about 1/4. quite hard when you cant use an index!

GET to know YOU game July 2013
Today we had our scavenger hunt (could be a treasure hunt title)
but before we did anything our 2 groups (one from a ward and one from a branch)
had 3 mins to get to know their partner then stand at the front and share what they learnt.
To begin with they stood by their mates, so I made the girls grab a boy (it was pretty even 10 girls ,11 boys, the 11th boy had to chat with the yw president!!) and drag him off and chit chat with him for 3 mins.
At first they just stared at me.
they would NOT move.
I said hurry up or you wont have time to know much about them.
I am serious, (as they still stared) GRAB A BOY!! GO>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
in the end they started coming towards me (they had to stand behind me in their pairs once they had someone) until all of them had paired off.
THEN I started the clock.
After a few minutes, we got them to randomly go up the front of the group and share some things about each other.
They then both got a lolly pop and the next group came up, either volunteered, or we chose if it became a staring match.
Because they were both painfully shy this helped break down barriers as they ate and swam later together, cos they felt they " had a mate of the opposite sex' on their side.
it wasnt like they were dating...it was just a friend. which was good.
They could stand and have a laugh with them, rather than feeling like they couldnt talk to them, 'cos they didnt know them'
well now they did know them and they could chit chat!
So good job sis blanch, brilliant.

NEW BEGINNINGS night April 2013
New beginnings night.
Hymn and prayer ( 5 mins)
Welcome, and share some of the church handbook re purpose of yws . Values/ colours/ how YW started (. 5 mins)
Values: small coloured butterflies and girls to place butterflies on vase and read out explanations - 2 each.
Nic to read
Ardeth Kapp, a former general Young Women president, says that the colours used to represent the values have no significant religious meaning by themselves, but they can be helpful as symbolic reminders of the principles behind the values:
White is symbolic of purity and Faith
· Divine Nature reminds us of God’s creations, the blue sky, and
all that is divine
· Individual Worth is red because it is bold and confident
· Knowledge is green because it is symbolic of growth
· Choice and Accountability, two values together, is represented
by putting two colours together (red and yellow make orange)
· Good Works brings sunshine, happiness, and light, so it is
represented by yellow
· Integrity is purple: the colour of royalty and righteousness
· The colour of Virtue is gold. Gold is precious, but must be refined.
As you live a virtuous life, you will be refined by your life's
experiences, and as you 'trust in the Lord' and draw closer to him
(5mins)
Personal progress: There are 8 values, you do 6 goals per value except virtue, where it is 4 goals - and a 10 hr project for each value. each month in YW we will do one goal ie tonight we will do individual worth in a minute. That is one goal, 5 more to go in individual worth
They do a 10 hr project twice a year, so in 4 yrs they are done. Most girls finish by 16 if started at 12, but we will finish by 17 and in the last year they can work towards their honour bee medallion. They have to do a 40 hr project and re read the book of Mormon. Or start again doing personal progress again. Their choice.
It is all in the book, even the things they are suppose to memorise. At the back there are the scriptures they need to read and they can tick.
They can do one goal at YW and one in the month on their own. BUT they need to run the goal past someone first, not just do it. It then gets signed off by the parents / branch president and/or the YW leaders,
I have given the girls some more ideas for goals from the old YW book, that I grew up with. More ideas in it. They work on whatever value the want to, when they want to, so long as by the end of the year they have done at least 10 goals and 2 projects .
This will mean they are done in 5 yrs. If they don’t have 5 yrs of YW left like abi and grace , they need to do more a year.
After they do a goal, they get a sticker on this chart which is displayed in the YW room and also in their books. After 6 goals they will get 6 stickers and a choc bar and after the project is done, a ribbon of that values colour to use as a book mark in their scriptures, (or their journal, which they get given, as scriptures are on phones now) they also get a sticker on the values page of a torch to show that value is NOW DONE and a small gift from us.
Mums can also do personal progress with their daughters. I m going to combine it with pursuit of excellence.
There are 3 goals you have to do and 3 elective. (you can replace 2 goals if you don’t like 2 of elective ones) THEN you do the project. Of which there are ideas. As a branch we have decided they can do the 6 goals and the project…over 6 yrs.
In whatever way they want. If they are working on a duke of Edinburgh award and it involves a 10 hr project, and you haven’t done all 6 goals, it will be signed off for you.
Some goals take 3 mins, others a few hours.
The YW evening ones will be completed that evening. So you can complete the goal. If you don’t come to YW that’s fine, but you will need to do 2 of your own goals that month. I suggest one goal at home that month and one at YW, or if we have stake activities some of them will be able to be included in personal progress.
So basically 6 goals, per value plus a 10 hr project x 8 values!! You also have to read Book of Mormon before 17, attend seminary, sacrament meeting etc then you get the young womans recognition medallion in sacrament meeting They come in silver or gold. As soon as you have done all you need to. Might take a year, might take 6 yrs.
The honour bee which can be done before leaving yws BUT after fulfilling personal progress, comes in silver or gold too.
Here are the activities for the next 9 mths. Any problems just shout.
We have young womens usually the 1st or 2nd Thursday nights, 3rd ward 3rd Thursday, in town, as a combined youth, and combined bream bay only once a month on a thurs/ fri/ or Saturday. Usually the end of the month but it is organised the month before at the end of the combined bream bay activity, say the last 15 mins of the activity which can then be taken to BYC to be approved.
( 10 mins)
We will now all participate in a YW value goal.
#7 goal, on individual worth page
Heavenly Father has given you special gifts. Read 1 Corinthians 12:4–12; 13; Moroni 7:12–13; 10:8–18; and Doctrine and Covenants 46:11–26. Ask a family member, a Young Women leader, and a friend to write down positive qualities the Lord has given you. List your gifts in your journal, and write how you can continue to develop these gifts and use them to serve your family and others.
So tonight we will write down your positive qualities, and this coming week, you can read the scriptures, mark them off in the back of your books and then show your parents to sign the goal off or sis blanch or I can…and bring it Sunday, so you can get a sticker..whoaoao
Some goals need thoughts written down in your journals.
Journals wont be read, all you have to do is show us you have written in them. We wont read them.
They also receive a torch medallion tonight, symbolising them not hiding their light under a bushel.
Here you go girls,
(10mins)
Now lets all write some things down, then we will close with some thoughts from president Anderson, then a hymn and a prayer and have dinner.
(10 mins)
*45 mins max. Short hymns. Will photocopy 2 and hand out, girls can say the prayers, lead the music, do the butterflies, fill in the papers for each other. They will be participating.
Start 4.45 pm sharp.
Will tell people to come at 4.30
Till 6pm
