Sept Youth GLASS painting night

We are doing the following on Thursday but with glasses.
As plates were too hard to come by ( and glasses were $7 for 12)
Copied off the net

Preparation:

GLOSS acrylic paint, paint brushes, clear glass plates (the thicker the better) washed and dried, and simple, easy to paint patterns. You can get patterns just about anywhere, off the web, from coloring books, etc.
You will be painting the underside of the plate so that food won't ever touch the paint.
Tape the design you have chosen on the side of the plate you will be eating off of so that you can see it through the underside of the plate (the side you'll be painting on).
Paint the pattern. Avoid painting letters or words because they are difficult to paint. If this is a must, remember they have to be painted on BACKWARDS so that when flipped over to the eating portion of the plate, they turn out right.
After allowing the paint to dry. Bake at 325 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes to make this painting project permanent. Baking makes the paint both dish washer and microwave safe.

Embroidery evening with YW ONLY

Our girls wanted to learn to knit and embroider so we bought them some wool and borrowed some needles and they were able to Learn to knit a scarf each for  personal progress and we also taught them to embroider on a scrap  of fabric.

I bought them a white hand towel and they are going to embroider their names, or a scripture reference onto the towel and pop it in their ' glory boxes'
( maybe progress to 2 towels and embroider his and hers on!)
The white represents faith / purity / virtue in their personal progress books.

They also learnt to sew on a button and make a spag Bolognaise which can be used with spaghetti, nacho corn chips, as a chilli with rice ( some kidney beans  were added), in tortillas, with burritos, as a sheppards pie with mash potato, mixed with cooked pasta and baked with cheese on top, on toast, in a toastie, on a jacket potato etc etc
To show them how versatile a bolognaise sauce cooked from scratch can be when they are at uni or on a mission

Recipe
Brown 500g mince, with a chopped  onion, and tsp garlic , add 1 tsp Tom paste

Add 1 tin tomatoes, drained baked beans so no sauce, just beans, tin corn, herbs, And a jar of bolognaise sauce. Dolmio etc
Cook 30 mins and then serve.

Sports night

August with 3 rd ward
2 teams. Lined up at opp SIDES of hall/ field ( not the ends)

5 sports.
The ' caller' calls out how many are playing and throws in a ball to show what they will be playing.
Ie
3 soccer as she throws a soccer ball into the middle.
3 team members from each side ... The first 3 members, run to the end of the hall, then back to the other end and the first team to run BACK to the ball  kicks the ball to others and tries to score a goal.
Once a goal is achieved. They go back to the end of their lines

Caller calls ' 4 hockey' and throws in a ball. Hockey sticks are at each end of hall already
They play, someone scores a goal, game over,

Caller says 2 basketball and throws a basket ball in etc etc
We used a coit ( like a baby teething ring but big) and you would have to stand still when you had the coit, and throw to your team mates to touch the coit on the far wall
Called it ' 5 frisbee' or ' 3 frisbee' however many you want but 5 is max, as it gets to crowded on the floor.
We played netball, soccer, frisbee, hockey, basketball,
Games finished when a team scored a goal.
It is very fast paced and the kids need a break after ' their turn' so are happy to line back Up and wait.

We call it multi sport in nz.
We play it in schools.

Then we had an hour of volleyball as they love that.
A fun evening

STUMP the branch presidency

or at least the one counsellor we have, on Sunday.
Carrying on from our scripture scavenger hunt I asked the kids to bring an object to sunday school with a scripture to go with said object. That object had to be IN the scripture. Not symbolic, (like one kid brought headphones..holy ghost and phone, prayer..NO!! it had to have the word in the scripture)

the counsellor had 2 mins (no cheating and using the index or hand held scriptures to look up 'key words')
to find a scripture that went with the object.

If he could find ANY scripture he won a choc bar, and if he couldnt the person who brought the object, they got the chocolate bar after sharing their scripture.
Some of the objects were apple, palm tree, file, ( 1 samuel 13;21...that was mine!! I won)  herbs, silver bowl, lantern, suit, shoes, book, hymns, white wool, valley, sign post with the number 7 on, lamp,  a toy snake

He won about 1/4. quite hard when you cant use an index!

GET to know YOU game July 2013

Today we had our scavenger hunt (could be a treasure hunt title)
but before we did anything our 2 groups (one from a ward and one from a branch)
had 3 mins to get to know their partner then stand at the front and share what they learnt.

To begin with they stood by their mates, so I made the girls grab a boy (it was pretty even 10 girls ,11 boys, the 11th boy had to chat with the yw president!!) and drag him off and chit chat with him for 3 mins.

At first they just stared at me.
they would NOT move.

I said hurry up or you wont have time to know much about them.

I am serious, (as they still stared) GRAB A BOY!! GO>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

in the end they started coming towards me (they had to stand behind me in their pairs once they had someone) until all of them had paired off.

THEN I started the clock.

After a few minutes, we got them to randomly go up the front of the group and share some things about each other.
They then both got a lolly pop and the next group came up, either volunteered, or we chose if it became a staring match.

Because they were both painfully shy this helped break down barriers as they ate and swam later together, cos they felt they " had a mate of the opposite sex' on their side.
it wasnt like they were dating...it was just a friend. which was good.
They could stand and have a laugh with them, rather than feeling like they couldnt talk to them, 'cos they didnt know them'
well now they did know them and they could chit chat!
So good job sis blanch, brilliant.
